The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that the country imported a total of 1.502 million net tonnes (NT) in October this year. Imports for the first ten months of this year amounted to NT 19.149 million. The above figures are based on the most recent data published in the USA.
Total steel imports rose sharply by about 20% in October, compared with the final data for September. In contrast, imports through October showed a marked decrease of 22.8% over the previous year.
Monthly finished steel imports rose 6.6% to 1.244 million. Cumulative finished steel imports for the first ten months of 2020 were NT13.612 million, down 25.9% from the corresponding period last year. In addition, the finished steel import market share was 18% in October and during the first ten months of 2020.
AISI forecasts total steel and finished steel imports in 2020 to be 23.0 million and 16.30 million, respectively.
Finished steel products, the volume of imports of which increased significantly compared to the previous month, are primarily reinforcing bars, imports of which increased by 105.9% and 95.4%, respectively.
