US Steel said blast furnace No. 8 at the Gary Works steel plant in Indiana, which has a capacity of 1.5 million tons of raw materials per year, was shut down as early as September 7. A reopening date has not yet been set.
One of two US Steel blast furnaces at Mon Valley Works in Pennsylvania is undergoing scheduled maintenance, which began on Sept. 3 and is expected to last 30 days. The blast furnace has a production capacity of 1.4 million tons of steel per year, and the shutdown operation will require about 115,000 tons of steel production.
US Steel's third-quarter earnings are expected to fall 74% year-on-year and 46% quarter-on-quarter.
