Indian private producer Tata Steel has restarted a blast furnace at its 1mtpa Neelachal Ispat Nigam (NINL) facility in Kalinganagar, Odisha, the company said Oct. 3.
On July 4, the steelmaker completed the acquisition of NINL through its subsidiary, Tata Steel Long Products, and plans to expand it to a 4.5mtpa long products facility over the next few years.
“Given that the facility has been out of service for two years, we wanted to quickly restart the furnace… We are now focused on gradually increasing production to full capacity as planned,” said Tata Steel TV CEO and Managing Director Narendran.
NINL was shut down in March 2020 due to huge losses and was put up for auction by the government last January.
Tata Steel last month approved a merger with its seven steel subsidiaries to improve operational efficiency and cut costs.
Tata Steel's steel production at Indian facilities was 19.06 million tonnes in fiscal year 2022 ending March.
