The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade has developed a strategy for the steel industry by 2030 with the goal of reducing chromium ore imports to Russia to below 30% of market demand in order to reduce dependence on imports.
To achieve this goal, Russia plans to develop the Saranovskoye field in the Northern Urals and the Kongor-Khromskoye field in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
Russia views chromium ore as a rare raw material, and imports account for most of its domestic consumption. According to statistics, imported chromium ore provides two-thirds of the needs of the domestic market.
The development of domestic chromium mining is limited due to the location of the mine and the low content of chromium oxide in the ore.
Russia plans to accelerate the development of new chromium deposits
