Nucor CEO Leon Topalian announced that a 1.2 million short tons (st)/yr electric arc furnace and a ladle smelter furnace have been commissioned in Brandenburg, Kentucky in Brandenburg, Kentucky. The plant was expected to produce the first sheet by the end of the year.
The company said Brandenburg is well positioned for solar and wind energy projects, especially offshore wind projects, which few steel mills in the world can compete with.
Nucor also expects its expanded Gallatin sheet plant in Ghent, Kentucky, to reach full capacity in the first quarter of 2023.
