Steelmaker QazSpecSteel LLC will invest $587 million in a new plant that will help reduce Kazakhstan's dependence on foreign billet and rebar, according to a Kazakh government announcement.
The new plant is estimated to have an annual capacity of 800,000 tons of steel billets and provide 1,500 jobs if it reaches full capacity. However, a detailed completion schedule has yet to be announced.
Upon completion, the plant will provide Kazakhstani manufacturers with blooms and blanks for the production of rails, railway wheels and building materials, which will reduce the annual import of semi-finished and finished products by $990 million.
