Turkey's crude steel production fell 19% year-on-year to 2.7 million tonnes in September, according to the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers Association (TCUD). The volume of production for the first nine months was 27.3 million tons, which is 9.3% less than a year earlier.
Export of steel from Turkey in September amounted to 1.4 million tons, which is 31.2% less than in the same month last year. Meanwhile, the value of exports fell 42.1% year on year to US$1.1 billion. At the same time, steel imports amounted to 1.1 million tons, an increase of 0.8% compared to the same month last year. However, the value of imports fell 6.5% year on year to US$1.1 billion.
TCUD pointed out that high energy costs have reduced the competitiveness of Turkey's steel industry, forcing some steel mills to cut production.
