The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has indicated that by the end of 2029, almost a quarter of U.S. coal-fired power generation capacity will be phased out as natural gas power generation and sustainable energy grow.
Of the 200,568 megawatts (MW) of coal-fired power plants currently in operation, 23% will be shut down. A total of 11,778 MW of coal-fired power plants will be decommissioned in the US in 2022, and no new coal-fired power plants are planned for the future.
In addition, older coal-fired generators face higher operating and maintenance costs, making them less competitive and may eventually be retired. Others have been discontinued due to lack of investment to comply with EPA regulations to limit wastewater discharges by 2028.
