Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, the rolling mill of German steel group Salzgitter AG, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Canada's Baffinland Iron Mines to explore the possibility of using direct-ship ore mined in Canada's Nunavut region in mild steel production.
Both sides will choose hydrogen-based steel production, most suitable for a direct reduction plant, with the goal of producing carbon-free raw materials by 2033.
Salzgitter said Baffinland was chosen because of its high-quality iron ore, after being crushed and screened to a steel mill, can be shipped directly to the market without beneficiation or processing, and no tailings are generated.
