US Steel to supply General Motors with verdeX steel

United States Steel Corporation will supply General Motors with its advanced solution called verdeX steel. Steel is produced with up to 75% less emissions than conventional blast furnace production, is produced with up to 90% recycled content and can be recycled endlessly without degradation.

verdeX's production also uses less water, in part by collecting all of the site's storm water, using it in production and returning it to the environment.

US Steel's verdeX will be produced at Big River Steel's LEED-certified plant, which also meets the ResponsibleSteel standard, and at a new high-tech plant under construction in Osceola, Arkansas. Steel produced at the Big River Steel plant will begin deliveries to GM's facilities starting this year.

In January 2021, US Steel closed a deal to acquire the remaining capital of Big River Steel for approximately $774 million in cash. BRS is the only steel mill in North America that combines an electric arc furnace (EAF) with a Ruhrstahl Heraeus degasser (RH) to produce cleaner steels with better formability.

The melting time of a 165-ton EAF is less than 38 minutes; EAF can be directly loaded with up to 100% scrap metal substitute material, HBI (Hot Briquetting Iron), DRI (Direct Reduced Iron), etc.

Once completed, US Steel's new $3 billion plant currently under construction in Osceola, Arkansas will use cutting-edge technologies to expand the production of sustainable advanced high-strength and electrical steels, including expanding its verdeX steel offering, which will be widely available to manufacturers and can help reduce their carbon footprint.

US Steel became the first US steelmaker to declare zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and the first North American steel company to join ResponsibleSteel, a global nonprofit working to make steel more resilient.
