Integrated steelmaker US Steel has restarted its last idle blast furnace at the Gary Works steel plant in Indiana.
The company has returned to service its 1.5 million short tons per year Blast Furnace No. 8 at Gary Works, which has been idle since September 7, 2022, as demand has improved.
US Steel blamed high levels of imports and market conditions for the shutdown.
The decision comes about a month after US Steel restarted a dormant 1.4mtpa Blast Furnace #3 at the Mon Valley Works in Pennsylvania.
Argus US HRC Midwest and South valuations rose to $1,150/share yesterday and are up 83% since hitting a low in late November.
