Rebar prices in Poland fell again due to weak demand, and local steel mills cut production, and higher costs began to take their toll, sources told Fastmarkets on Friday, May 26. Official proposals from two local manufacturers were published earlier in the week. at PLN 2,900 (USD 690) per tonne CPT (PLN 2,850-2,870 per ton ex-works), although no deals were heard at these prices.
But sources in the market said that the plants agreed to lower prices. It is noteworthy that during the evaluation week, some transactions were registered at the level of 2800-2850 per ton on ex-works terms.
Fastmarkets weekly valuation for steel rebar (rebar) for the domestic market with exports from Poland was PLN 2800-2850 per ton on Friday, down PLN 150 per ton from PLN 2950-3000 per ton on May 19.
In the secondary market, rebar prices fell from PLN 2850-2900 per tonne CPT compared to about PLN 3100 per tonne CPT the previous week.
Sources in the market believe that rebar prices in the country have reached a minimum level. Local producers said that the current price is “unacceptable” for them, taking into account the cost.
One rebar manufacturer in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski was reported to have suspended operations for three weeks due to weak demand and steadily declining prices.
Several sources told Fastmarkets that another manufacturer in Zawiercie was considering a four-day, four-holiday schedule.
The third plant in Warsaw also cut production.
However, market sources said that reduced availability is unlikely to drive up prices in the short term.
