Japan and Saudi Arabia have joined forces to develop decarbonization technologies and resources.
During the recent visit of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to Jeddah, Arabia, the leaders of the two countries signed 26 energy cooperation memorandums. Japan is providing technology to Saudi Arabia to expand solar power and improve the use of hydrogen and ammonia as clean energy. In addition, Japan will help accelerate the development of Saudi Arabia's copper, iron and zinc mines. Saudi Arabia also maintains continued support for Japan's oil.
Japan imports nearly all of the crude oil it consumes, with oil from Saudi Arabia accounting for about one-third of the total, making the Middle Eastern country an important energy partner.
Japan is keen to ensure the stability of its oil supply, while Saudi Arabia is betting on investment in advanced Japanese technology to build a more diversified economy.
