Liberty Steel Galati improves product quality with MULPIC plate mill system

Romania's largest integrated steel mill, Liberty Galati, has placed an order with Primetals Technologies for a multi-purpose intermittent cooling system (MULPIC) and water treatment plant, which will enable it to expand its high value-added product portfolio at Primetals' plate mill. said August 8th.

The engineering company will design and supply the entire in-line plate cooling system, consisting of three blocks of six meters each. Collectors and water pipes are made of stainless steel, which guarantees a long service life of the equipment and a reduction in emissions.

MULPIC combines hardware with process control technology and provides an integrated wafer cooling system designed to achieve cooling rates and temperature differentials required for wafers with different characteristics.

Controlled distribution of water with a cooling accuracy of up to 12 degrees Celsius allows processing sheets with a thickness of 8 to 80 mm and a width of 1500 to 4150 mm. This will allow the Galati plant, which is part of UK-registered Liberty Steel, to expand its product range and improve its quality.

“The project will be completed next year and will allow us to meet our customers' demand for higher value products,” said Sandeep Biswas, CEO of Liberty Primary Steel and Mining.

He said an accelerated cooling system is needed for modern heavy plate plants such as the Galati plant to produce stronger grades of steel that require faster cooling rates and greater cooling accuracy.

The excellent uniformity of temperature and flatness of the plates, provided by accelerated in-line cooling, allows the production of stronger steel grades that require 25-50% less alloying elements. This means not only significant savings, but also a lower environmental impact associated with the extraction and processing of these alloying elements.

Steel coil and plate manufacturer Liberty Galati has a nominal capacity of 3 million tons of hot-rolled flats per year.

In mid-2022, Liberty Galati launched a tender to select a supplier of hybrid electric arc furnace technology needed to develop mild steel production.
