Pre-flight preparation of an aircraft is one of the most important stages of its operation. Therefore, ground service engineers take it extremely responsibly. During pre-flight preparation, it is necessary to provide power to the on-board network of the flight equipment. Moreover, electricity in the form used, for example, at an airfield, is not at all suitable for the on-board network of an aircraft. This is why dedicated aerodrome power supplies are used for pre-flight preparation.
Basically, the following conversion equipment is used at aerodromes:
- stationary frequency converters;
- mobile frequency converters;
- undertrap frequency converters;
- suspended frequency converters;
- rectifiers.
The Aerodrome Power Supply is required to convert the standard mains voltage used at the airport to the voltage used in the on-board network of an aircraft or helicopter. Therefore, the output voltage of frequency converters used at aerodromes must have the following characteristics: it must be a three-phase frequency of 400 Hertz. Phase voltage should be 115V and line voltage should be 200V. Therefore, all power supplies used in pre-flight preparation should provide adequate voltage.
With regard to stationary converters, this is the most optimal option, since they produce a minimum level of nonlinear distortion, high efficiency and low level of energy consumption. Such converters are suitable for servicing any type of aircraft, both during pre-flight preparation and maintenance.
Mobile frequency converters allow performing voltage conversion in the immediate vicinity of the aircraft, which is very convenient, while having the ability to move, they allow powering various external circuits during the pre-flight preparation of an aircraft or helicopter. The under-ladder frequency converter has the following design feature, it must be used together with the retractable part of the ladder, in the same way providing the aircraft circuits with three-phase power supply, which is necessary for pre-flight preparation of the aircraft. Rectifiers are used to provide 28.5 V power supply to flight equipment, which is used in the internal networks of aircraft and helicopters.
Thus, specialized electrical equipment is used for ground pre-flight service.
