Manure storage is a structure that has found active use in livestock complexes and is used for collecting, disinfecting and storing manure.
It is no secret that manure is a valuable and natural fertilizer containing all the essential elements for plant growth and development, nutrients and beneficial bacteria. But, besides this, fresh manure can contain eggs of helminths, carriers of dangerous infections, and manure runoff causes blooming of water bodies, soil erosion, groundwater and air pollution due to emissions of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia. The process of anaerobic fermentation, which in natural conditions can take 3-4 years, helps to neutralize and disinfect manure masses, the use of special biological products helps to accelerate it.
The construction of a manure storage facility allows to prevent the ingress of manure into the soil and water, as well as to store the manure for the required amount of time.
It is necessary to equip the manure storage near the farmyard and the place where it will be possible to arrange the passage of transport. The best option is to build a manure storage facility in a closed place with buildings or trees.

The manure storage lagoon is a type of manure storage facility. In fact, this is a foundation pit dug in the ground. The ideal option for a livestock complex is the presence of two lagoons, which allow collecting manure, keeping it (half a year), unloading it on the fields for the spring and autumn application of the accumulated volume of fertilizer throughout the year.
There are two types of manure storage lagoons: open and closed.
The arrangement of both types of lagoons is the same. First of all, a pit is dug in the ground and a dam is built around its perimeter. The material for the dam is the soil that remained after the excavation of the foundation pit. The depth of the dam should be 50 m, the deepening relative to the ground level should not exceed 13 m.
The basis for the future manure storage is a film covering that prevents the spread of odors, nitrogen fumes and infections. The bottom film cover in the lagoon is an anti-seepage screen that prevents manure from entering the soil. Closed manure storage lagoons also have a top film that prevents nitrogen loss and the dilution of manure by precipitation. In addition, enclosed lagoons allow the installation of methane gas collection equipment.
