Transportation of metal by rail is an expensive and sometimes dangerous activity. Metal is one of the most common industrial cargoes. Its transportation by rail requires compliance with special rules and the creation of conditions. The advantage of transporting metal by rail is low cost, especially over long distances. What metal is usually transported by rail
Railway transport is usually preferred when transporting the following types of metal:
- Scrap metal;
- Sheet metal;
- Rolled metal and metal products;
- Non-ferrous metals.
How metal is loaded by rail
Depending on the type of metal transported, different types of packaging and fasteners are used, which affect the method of loading and the conditions of transportation.
Scrap metal is loaded into open gondola cars in compressed "packages" of 300 kg or transported in a separate container. Loading is carried out using a manipulator or a stationary crane.
Loading of rolled metal, metal sheets and metal products is carried out in small batches using a crane. Depending on the type of product packaging, the method of fastening is also selected. When loading long loads, fixation takes place in several places in order to secure both the load itself and the car in which it is transported.
How cargo is secured
As we already said, the securing of loads depends on their type. When transporting coils with cable, special supports installed on specialized wagons serve as fastening. When installing the coils in a universal car, they are placed "on their side" and fixed with cables to the posts.
Rolled metal is loaded in separate bundled batches and fixed on special frames or other prepared base. Wooden sheets are placed between them to prevent damage during transportation.
For fastening metal pipes, cars must be equipped with stands, cradles and a thrust frame. It prevents the pipes from rubbing against the bevelling. The pipes must be well secured and immobilized, otherwise such a load is quite capable of causing serious damage to the car.
What wagons are used for transportation
For the railway transportation of metal, universal (platforms, open wagons, covered wagons) and specialized wagons are used. The latter allow achieving high standards of transportation of various types of goods.
Covered wagons are used when it is necessary to reliably protect the cargo from the atmosphere
