Features of cutting steel and metal products

Особенности резки стали и металлических изделий

Steel processing opens up a wide range of possibilities for the design and creation of various products in any direction. Cutting steel correctly is the key to successful construction, repair or assembly. All further work depends on the neat and even edge of the cut metal part. The cut edge, as a rule, is subsequently involved in joining various elements of metal structures, welding seams and joining individual sections of any product.

Classification of types of steel cutting

Absolutely any metal products can be cut, ranging from simple sheets of various thicknesses, pipes, profiles, rolled sections, and ending with complex metal structures. In this case, an accurate and accurate cut is always important, both for fast and efficient work and in order to comply with safety measures.

There are the following types of steel cutting:

  1. mechanical;
  2. gas;
  3. plasma;
  4. waterjet;
  5. laser.

Features of various types of steel cutting

It should be noted right away that mechanical cutting of steel has a number of disadvantages and is inferior to thermal methods. The main one is the unevenness of the metal cut edge. Mechanical cutting is most often done with a coarse tool that exerts a lot of pressure on the metal. These tools include hydraulic shears, milling cutters, abrasive tools and other equipment. This type of processing on thick metal bends the upper edge of the cut, while simultaneously stretching the lower edge, which makes the cut point vertically elongated and, accordingly, increases the thickness of the edge. When mechanically cutting thin sheet metal, the edges will bend, twist, and unnecessary burrs.

Thermal methods of cutting steel are devoid of these disadvantages. These types of work require significant heating of the metal at the cut and can affect its physical characteristics and even change the chemical composition. The main problem in flame cutting is the oxidation of the melting steel under the high temperature torch. Flame cutting is quite inexpensive and can cut metal up to 150 mm thick, but can also degrade its performance. For this, gas cutting is carried out in an inert gas environment, which isolates the molten metal from contact with atmospheric oxygen.

Waterjet, laser and plasma types of cutting have become more perfect, have a high speed, make an even and accurate cut, but they require expensive industrial equipment. Therefore, these works are recommended to be left to professionals.
