What is a voltage regulator?

Power lines do not always supply voltage stably. Failures or surges can cause damage to electrical appliances, wiring, or even fire. In order to prevent possible accidents, stabilizers are often installed in residential and industrial buildings.

What is a voltage stabilizer?

The stabilizer - is a device designed to maintain a constant voltage on the line. Maintaining the voltage does not depend on fluctuations in the supply network and the volume of the load.

Certain conditions are required for the stabilizer to work. The main thing is to maintain the deviations within the working limits. Otherwise, the load will exceed the permissible limits, and all electrical appliances connected to the stabilizer will be de-energized.

Types of stabilizers

There are two main types of this device - single-phase and three-phase voltage stabilizer . When choosing equipment, it is necessary to take into account the type of power supply of the network so that the stabilizer is connected to the object and provides the required power. This figure is approximately 7 - 25 kW for single-phase and 100 - 500 kW for three-phase devices.

There are also several types of stabilizers:

  • Ferroresonant (operate on the basis of magnetic saturation of the chokes; stabilization accuracy is from 1 to 3%, but depends on the volume of the load),
  • Electromechanical (used with manual autotransformers, these devices have a high accuracy of 2-3% and a low cost, but have a low speed of regulation),
  • Electronic (triac, thyristor) (based on automatic switching of transformer sections using power switches, they are fast, have a wide voltage range and accurate stabilization from 0.5% to 7%).

Today, electronic stabilizers have become the most common. Most of the manufacturers involved in the development of these devices produce this type of equipment. Among them are:

Terms of Use

Voltage stabilizers work only under certain conditions. It is important to consider temperature and atmospheric pressure. Most devices must be installed at temperatures from +5 to +35 C. However, there are models that can operate at low temperatures, such as, for example, Phantom stabilizers that can withstand conditions up to -5 C.
