Agriculture is an export-oriented branch of the Belarusian economy, with a positive trade balance, accounting for over 15 percent of total exports. The only problem is that almost all exports, in particular dairy and meat products, go to Russia.
Agriculture remains the least transformed sector of the Belarusian economy, although it is quite successful in comparison with other countries in the post-Soviet space. Private farmers, the backbone of agriculture in any market economy, contribute over two percent of total agricultural production. Together with products from personal subsidiary plots for their own needs, it makes up less than a quarter of the total agricultural production.
Nonetheless, organizations with a large state participation constitute an overwhelming majority. In recent years, subsidies to the agricultural sector have ranged from 9 to 12 percent of GDP, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. At the same time, the contribution of agriculture to GDP is about 10 percent.
On the other hand, with little or no financial support from the state, private farmers have shown themselves to be more productive than subsidized state enterprises. Over the past 15 years, private farmers have increased production by 16 percent per year, that is, 10 percentage points faster than state-owned enterprises.
