Stainless steel is indispensable for many industrial, construction, chemical and consumer applications. The most widely used products from stainless steel are stainless steel pipes and sheets. When considering total life cycle costs, stainless steel is often the least expensive material.
Stainless steel is essentially a low carbon steel that contains 10.5% or more chromium. The addition of chromium gives the steel unique stainless, corrosion-resistant and improved mechanical properties. The chromium content in steel allows the formation of an adhesive, invisible corrosion-resistant chromium oxide film on the steel surface. If it is damaged mechanically or chemically, then this film will self-repair, even in the presence of very small amounts of oxygen.
The corrosion resistance and other useful properties of steel are enhanced by the increased chromium content and the addition of other elements such as molybdenum, nickel, etc. Nickel gives stainless steel a shiny and bright appearance.

Low-alloy grades do not corrode in atmospheric and clean water environments, while high-alloy grades can withstand corrosion in most acids, alkaline solutions and chlorine-containing media used in process plants.
