ISSF Global Stainless Steel Production Statistics recorded a jump in global production during the six months of 2018. Stainless steel production increased 13.3% to 26.060 million tonnes compared to 23 million tonnes in the first half of 2017.
At the same time, the total production of Brazil, South Africa, Russia, South Korea and Indonesia grew by 68.3%. Production increased from 1.702 million tons to 2.865 million tons for the year, according to ISSF data. This is due to the growth in consumption of stainless steel products in these countries. All regions showed an increase in production over the previous year. European stainless steel output recorded a slight increase of 1.4% from 3.882 million tonnes in the first half of 2017 to 3.935 million tonnes in the first half of 2018. US production also rose marginally by 1.6% to 1.443 million tonnes. Chinese production grew significantly by 13.2% over the previous year to 13.640 million tonnes, more than half of global production. In January-June 2017, the country produced only 12.046 million tons.
The Asian region, excluding China and South Korea, has seen 5.8% annual production growth. Stainless steel output during the second quarter of the year was 13.286 million tonnes, up 4% compared to the 12.774 million tonnes production recorded during the first quarter of 2018.
