Greek steel company Sovel has awarded Danieli Automation a contract to modernize the entire electrical and automation system of its long mill in Almyros, Magnissia.
The project aims to improve safety, stability and reliability of production so that the plant is ready for the future by replacing aging equipment with new and modern Danieli Automation devices and advanced process controls, the supplier says.
The unit is a single row long section rolling mill with single line slitting for medium diameter bars and a double line with fast finishing units, hardening, tailing breaking and double twin channels for high speed production of smaller sizes.
The project, which complies with the European Machinery Directive, will be completed by August 2025.
Sovel is an electric arc furnace steel mill. He joined Sidenor Group in 2001. In 2007, it introduced the new Consteel direct scrap feed system, which reduces energy consumption for scrap preheating. In 2022, Sidenor revealed plans to install a 6 MW photovoltaic array at the Sovel plant.
Sovel produces concrete rebar in bars and coils, wire rod, commercial rebar and a range of other products for construction projects and a variety of industrial applications. The plant's capacity is 1.2 million tons/year.
Greece produced 130,000 tonnes of crude steel in November, according to worldsteel. Volumes for January-November were 1.27 million tons, compared to 1.09 million tons for the same period last year.
