Skilled labor shortages can be a serious problem for the steel industry in many countries around the world. For example, in India, more than 28,500 workers will be required to increase the annual capacity of the steel industry to 300 million tons within 10 years. The local steel industry estimates that the lack of human resources will be the main obstacle.
Manpower will also be required to increase capacity to meet the planned target of increased steel production per person per year. Private steel companies believe there are several challenges that need to be overcome in order to reach high levels in annual capacity. They clarified that the main problem is the lack of an adequate labor force, in addition to the lack of funds and the lack of the necessary infrastructure.
The Indian steel industry currently employs about 200,000 people. About 15 percent of the total workforce in the steel industry are engineers, according to estimates by local steel firms. Another requirement for the development of metallurgy is the increase in the number of engineers to 43,000 in the period until 2024-2025.
The chairman of India's largest steel producer, SAIL, said: "Given the need for R&D and other ancillary processes, there is an additional need for the steel industry of around 15,000 metallurgists over the next few years."
