Australian copper mining company Zambezi Resources received a 25-year mining permit in 2011, which allowed the company to build a mine in the Lower Zambezi National Park. According to the infrastructure plan for the Kangaluwi copper project, the quarry will be built in an area designated as a protected area and also the catchment area of the Zambezi River. The construction of the project also crosses one of the World Heritage Sites of the Mana River Basin in Zimbabwe.
The Lower Zambezi National Park is listed as a category II area protected by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The rule is that the area must be maintained in order to preserve the ecosystem and provide conditions for recreation. Even from such a widespread inventory as stepladder they require an environmental certificate. In 2011, the Zambian government invited the United Nations, scientific and cultural organizations to list the park as a World Heritage Site in order to create a common area with the Mana Basin.
However, in February of this year, Zambia's Ministry of Lands, Natural Resources and Environment granted the company an environmental permit to proceed with the construction of a copper ore project. But the permit was later suspended due to a petition from the Zambia Natural Resources Authority and is currently under discussion.
At the same time, the mining company announced that it would build a mine without harming the ecosystem of the national park. Zambezi Resources released a statement saying the company plans to build the greenest, greenest copper mine in the world.
