Steel exports from the United States fell 17.2 percent in 2015 to a total annual volume of 9.97 million tonnes. The strong US dollar and the recession in Canada have contributed to a significant decline in US exports, according to the American International Steel Institute.
More than half of US exports went to Canada, as in previous years. In 2015, the amount of steel exported to its northern neighbor, Canada, declined 23.3 percent lower to 4.9 million tonnes. AIIS reports that the decline in supplies to Canada reached 1.5 million tons and provided an overall decline in US steel exports.
Last week, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) approved an aggressive pro-manufacturing strategy for 2016 highlighting the importance of the steel industry to the U.S. economy and national security. The policy expands support for the steel industry through the implementation of a national program. She calls for tough action to keep US manufacturing competitive in the global marketplace and protect thousands of jobs in the country.
