Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan are working on the creation of a joint North-South energy corridor. The lifting of sanctions on Iran should play an important role in the development of ties with this country.
The creation of the North-South corridor is especially important for Azerbaijan. For this purpose, a special working group was created, and the energy ministers of the three countries are working on this issue, as Azerbaijani Energy Minister Aliyev said. The countries are doing a lot of work not only in the transport sector, but also in the energy sector, which involves the export of electricity from Russia to Azerbaijan and further to Iran.
He noted that Azerbaijan and Iran are implementing large projects in the oil and gas sector. "On the agenda is the issue of the transit of Iranian gas through the territory of Azerbaijan, as well as issues such as the use of Azerbaijani gas storage facilities by Iran, and other areas of cooperation that we will develop," the minister said.
In November last year, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak at the 12th meeting of the permanent Russian-Iranian commission on trade and economic cooperation confirmed his interest in uniting energy systems with Azerbaijan and Iran. “We also confirm our interest in continuing to study the issue of uniting the energy systems of Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan and consider it expedient to resume the trilateral working group,” said Alexander Novak.
Azerbaijan confirmed its interest and readiness to resume meetings within the framework of the trilateral working group on the issue of uniting the energy systems of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia.
