Oil production began in the Barents Sea as a result of the completion of a joint project between Italian ENI (with a 65 percent share) and Norway's state oil company Statoil (with a 35 percent share). Oil production in the Barents Sea is carried out on the northernmost offshore oil platform, Goliath, which was delivered to Norwegian waters with a delay of one year due to the need for additional approvals.
The reserves of the field are estimated at 174 million barrels or 20.5 million tons. Production began despite numerous protests from environmentalists and green activists who oppose oil drilling in the fragile Arctic ecosystem.
The platform was delivered to Norwegian waters from the South Korean shipyard Hyundai in mid-April last year. Delivery time was 63 days. Goliath was the first attempt at oil production in the Norwegian part of the Barents Sea. However, Norwegian experts warn that the high cost of oil production in the Arctic will make the Goliath project profitable only if the oil price is at least $ 95 per barrel.
