A group of leading American industrial groups have formed a new coalition to oppose the granting of "market economy" status to China. The new coalition noted that granting market economy status to this country would result in job losses in the domestic manufacturing industry.
US manufacturers claim China has failed to meet the basic requirements set by the US charter and the DOC Department of Commerce. The association claims that China does not deserve this status. Meanwhile, China notes that the status should be automatically assigned after the completion in December of this year 15 years from the date of accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
According to manufacturers, “Fair international competition and a level playing field are essential to the global position of American manufacturers. Effective and predictable trade enforcement mechanisms must include accurate assessment and response to distortions from non-market economies that can pose a serious threat to workers. Associations that have united in the fight against the granting of market economy status pump the Aluminum Association, the American Fiber Association, the American Iron and Steel Institute, the National Council of Textile Organizations, and others. These organizations account for nearly 800,000 direct jobs in US manufacturing.
