The Association Agreement between Turkey and the EU was signed back in 1963. Ankara applied for EU membership in 1987, but accession negotiations did not begin until 2005. Full EU membership has continued to be a priority for Ankara for decades.
Before the EU demanded that Turkey fulfill 72 conditions, now it is necessary to fulfill 35 conditions. To abolish the visa regime with the EU, the Turkish parliament will have to approve a number of changes by May 4 this year, one of them is new passports that meet EU standards.
Earlier, the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said that the European Union may decide on a visa-free regime with Turkey in the fall of 2016, but subject to Ankara's fulfillment of all requirements. The first visa liberalization report will be published in March, and in June 2016, Turkey will begin to fulfill the rest of the conditions.
