The latest statistics provided by the German Steel Recycling Federation (BDSV) indicate that the country's scrap exports in 2015 hit their lowest level since 2009.
Germany's scrap steel exports totaled 7.366 million tonnes during 2015, down 16.3 percent from the previous year. German scrap exports during the entire 2014 totaled 8.8 million tonnes.
The Netherlands was the largest export destination for German scrap. Germany exported 1.557 million tonnes of scrap metal to the Netherlands, accounting for more than one-fifth of the country's total scrap metal exports throughout 2015. Exports to the Netherlands fell significantly, by almost 16 percent, compared to the previous year.
Italy was the second largest importer of German scrap. Exports of scrap metal from the country to Italy totaled 1.249 million tonnes, down 23 percent from the previous year. In 2015, Luxembourg was in third place with 1.074 million tonnes, down 7.3 year-on-year compared to 2014.
Other key importers of German scrap during 2015 were Belgium (987,000 tonnes, down 14 percent year-on-year) and France (797,000 tonnes, down 2.6 percent).
In addition, Germany's scrap steel imports fell 14 percent year on year. Imports throughout 2015 amounted to 4.56 million tons.
