In February 2017, the United States will begin to increase its ground forces in Europe in response to Russia's aggressive policies, according to the US Command in Europe. According to the Pentagon, from the point of view of strengthening the eastern flank of NATO against the background of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it is necessary to warn Moscow against further aggression and provide security guarantees to allies in Europe.
The brigades of armored forces that will be sent to protect the countries of Eastern Europe, such as Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, assume the basing of heavy equipment - 250 Abrams tanks (Abrams) and about 4,200 soldiers.
Since the presence of US troops in Europe has not yet come close to their Cold War-level numbers, this is largely a symbolic move calculated to show how the United States cares about the security of Europe, US military experts say.
