A floating wind farm is under construction off the coast of Scotland. For the production of wind turbines, the steel will be supplied by ArcelorMittal. The wind farm will be built by the Navatia-Windar joint venture owned by Statoil Hywind Scotland.
Five floating wind turbines will appear deep in Buchan, just 25 kilometers east of Peterhead. Each of them will weigh 3,500 tons and will be 14.4 m in the widest part. The column will be submerged to a depth of 100 m and secured in the lower part. The underwater section will have two watertight compartments of ballast tanks filled with water and rocks to ensure the stability of the floating structures even in harsh weather conditions.
Steel supplies for construction began in December last year and will be completed in May this year. Construction began in January. ArcelorMittal will supply a total of 5,300 tonnes of steel plates from the ArcelorMittal plant in Gijon, Austria.
