China has imposed trade sanctions against North Korea in an effort to suspend imports of gold and rare earth metals. The export of aviation fuel is also prohibited. Thus, Beijing decided to adapt to the new UN Security Council resolution, which greatly tightened sanctions against North Korea in response to Pyongyang's nuclear weapons tests.
Beijing's trade restrictions also include any material that can be used to make jet fuel. China also announces a ban on coal imports from North Korea. The mining industry is the most important sector of the North Korean economy. Experts say this income helps fund the nuclear program.
North Korea supplied Beijing with 20 million tons of coal last year, up 27 percent from a year earlier. Isolated from almost the entire world, North Korea is highly dependent on China economically. So far, China is North Korea's only ally providing substantial aid.
North Korea continues to attempt to launch missiles despite the latest UN Security Council resolution. The communist regime is committing them in response to ongoing US and South Korean military exercises, which Pyongyang believes are an attempted invasion.
