The United States and Russia have no right to set conditions for Turkey to close the Turkish-Syrian border, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said, according to TRT Haber. He believes that the situation on the border with Syria is Ankara's internal affair
“Only Turkey has the right to settle the situation within its borders. Turkey is not a country to dictate terms to, ”Ahmet Davutoglu said. According to him, the Turkish-Syrian border is the only hope for refugees from Syria who are fleeing the war in their country.
This reaction was caused by the fact that during the last telephone conversation between US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin, a number of issues were discussed, including the closure of the Turkish-Syrian border.
There are now over two million Syrian refugees in Turkey. The refugee camps are home to about 300 thousand people, the rest are in the Turkish provinces. In Istanbul alone, there are now 40 thousand refugees from Syria.
Turkey has spent over $ 10 billion on the maintenance of Syrian refugees. In recent years, refugees from Syria have made attempts to illegally enter the EU through the Aegean Sea, which often leads to their death.
Since March 2011, Syria has been in a state of armed conflict, as a result of which more than 220,000 people have died, according to the UN. The government forces are opposed by gangs of militants belonging to various armed formations. The most dangerous are the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist groups, which are most active.
