During the construction of a new sarcophagus at the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, 200 thousand tons of steel are used. Construction, ongoing for several years, should protect the damaged reactor for the next 100 years. Construction will be completed next year.
The dome itself will require 25,000 tons of steel. Last year, the two separate parts of the structure were merged together. This year, equipment will be installed, including a sophisticated ventilation system that should control the atmosphere inside the structure, regulate temperature and humidity, and also limit the emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere from the destroyed reactor. In total, the structure should weigh 36 thousand. tons
For the construction, 12 thousand tons of reinforcing bars of the ArcelorMittal plant in Krivoy Rog were used. The company is the main supplier of steel for the construction of a new shelter at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The profiles for the internal structure will also be supplied. In total, 200 thousand tons of steel should be used during the construction. Completion of the work is scheduled for autumn 2017.
