NATO's new commander, US General Curtis Scaparotti, said he sees Russia as the biggest threat to the US. He said he sees the flights of Russian fighters in April near a US warship in the Baltic Sea as a clear signal from Moscow.
In addition, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg recently said in Washington that NATO needs to advance in Eastern Europe in order to position itself against Russia. These statements indicate that the end of a new Cold War in Europe is not expected.
Scaparotti has served the US Army at all focal points in recent years: in Iraq, Afghanistan and more recently in Korea, where he clashed with Pyongyang and President Kim Jong Un as an enemy. Now the 60-year-old military man has a new adversary in sight - Russian President Vladimir Putin. On Tuesday, Scaparotti assumed command of US forces in Europe, and on Wednesday, NATO's high command, which is transferred to NATO headquarters in Mons, Belgium.
NATO has already structured its military doctrine against Russia on the premise that the rapid reaction forces should strengthen their presence on the eastern border, which is scheduled to be discussed during the July summit.
