EU sanctions against Russia are likely to be extended, according to EUobserver. The magazine gives its assessment based on three unnamed sources from the EU. At the same time, it is considered likely that the extension of the sanctions will be made by an unofficial decision before the meeting of the heads of government at the end of June. At the G7 meeting, consultations were held between states and all points were set.
Italy refused to renew sanctions at the G7 summit. This was surprising after the US, UK, Germany and France all spoke in favor of a continuation. Resilience to the impact of sanctions within the EU and in Germany has grown in recent weeks.
EUobserver quotes one diplomat as saying: “If I had to bet, I would say that the sanctions will be renewed at the Coreper (Committee of Permanent Representatives) level before the summit, but the discussion on this topic is planned as a gesture for those countries, who need it. " So, the Dutch government says they want a debate on sanctions, writes EUobserver.
