Posco Gwangyang's steel mill in South Korea relaunched its blast furnace 5 after the upgrade. As a result, the furnace capacity increased from 3,950 cubic meters to 5,500 cubic meters, thus increasing the production capacity to 5 million tonnes per year. It is currently the 9th largest blast furnace in the world.
With the modernization, a number of changes have also been made to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact, and the production cycle lasts more than 15 years. Gwangyang currently has two 5500 cubic meter ovens as well as the world's largest oven with a 6,000 cubic meter capacity. In total, the plant can produce 21 million tons of steel annually.
The Gwangyang Metallurgical Plant is the second largest POSCO plant in the country after the Pohang plant. It currently produces steel that is used to make bridges, steel structures, cars, refrigerators, and more.
