Daimler may start production in the Moscow region in the near future. The company has long been interested in Russia, and the negotiations are already close to completion.
Mercedes' subsidiary Daimler is considering building a car manufacturing plant in Russia. Mercedes was in talks with Russian authorities to check if economic conditions exist for local car production, Daimler Group said on Wednesday. The planned assembly plant in the Moscow region should be able to supply the Russian market with up to 30,000 vehicles per year.
Production of SUVs is planned. Daimler wants the plant to be able to bypass import duties and get more favorable conditions in the state wholesale trade, so the investment agreement is being discussed in detail.
Negotiations on the project have been going on since mid-2014, but now it is planned to conclude a special investment agreement with the Russian Ministry, which is expected within the next two weeks.
Unlike rival BMW, Daimler is not yet represented by its own car production in Russia. The Russian car market has almost halved since a record year in 2012 and is now at one of its lowest levels in a decade due to the ongoing economic crisis. However, the industry is hoping to see more sales.
