World crude steel production in 66 countries reported by the World Steel Association (Worldsteel) in June 2016 amounted to 135.720 million tonnes, which is comparable to the same indicator of 135.669 million tonnes in June 2015. World crude steel production in the first six months of 2016 was 794.8 million tonnes, down -1.9% year-on-year.
The steel output of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) during the first half of the year showed an increase of 0.6%. In June 2016, Russia produced 5.8 million tonnes of crude steel, up 2.5% compared to June 2015. Ukraine produced 1.8 million tonnes of crude steel, down 8.6% from the same month in 2015. North America and the Middle East reported negative results for the first half of the year - 0.6% and -3.2%, respectively. The United States received 6.8 million tonnes of crude steel in June 2016, decreasing yield by -0.1% from June 2015. South American production dropped significantly by 13.8% in the first six months of 2016 compared to the same period in 2015. Crude steel production in Brazil in June 2016 amounted to 2.5 million tonnes, down 8.5% in June 2015.
In the first half of 2016, steel production in Asia decreased by -1.0%. China's crude steel production in June 2016 reached 69.5 million tonnes, an increase of 1.7% compared to June 2015. Elsewhere in Asia: Japan produced 8.8 million tonnes of steel in June 2016, an increase of 2.7%; South Korea's production was 5.5 million tonnes in June 2016, down 6.7% from June 2015. Crude steel production in Turkey in June 2016 amounted to 2.9 million tonnes, an increase of 2.0% in June 2015.
In the EU, production in the first half of the year fell by -6.1%. Germany produced 3.7 million tonnes of crude steel in June 2016, a decrease of -2.1% compared to June 2015. Italy produced 2.0 million tonnes of crude steel, up 5.9% on June 2015. France produced 1.3 million tonnes of crude steel, decreasing yield by -5.1% compared to June 2015. Spain produced 1.1 million tonnes of steel, down 13.7% from June 2015.
The utilization rate of crude steel production capacity in 66 countries in June 2016 was 69.4%. This is 3.3 percent lower than in June 2015, and compared to May 2016, lower by 2 percentage points.
