Maintaining Russia's current position in the European energy market is the most formidable obstacle to increasing the share of renewable energy sources in electricity generation.
Of greatest concern in light of Russian gas supplies are plans to develop renewable energy sources in Germany and Italy. Both countries are the largest consumers of Russian gas in the European Union. In total, they buy over 70 billion m3. A further increase in electricity production from renewable energy sources will mean a decrease in gas purchases. Especially in Italy, where the energy dependence on gas is relatively high, which is more important here than in Germany, analysts explain.
What steps can Russia take? Fortunately, analysts say most of the gas consumed by industry is still under pressure from renewable energy sources. However, aggressive pricing and competition for customers will be required.
Nevertheless, it is becoming increasingly clear that it may be necessary for the excess Russian gas to be redirected to other markets, including, for example, to China. There can also be an emphasis on the development of LNG, thus Russia will sell raw materials to more distant markets.
