Kazakhstan imposed a six-month ban on the export of ferrous scrap starting from August 29, 2016. The country's Minister for Investment and Development Zhenis Kassymbek cited as the main motivation for this step "a critical shortage of scrap for local metallurgists."
The latest data released by the World Steel Association confirms that steel production in Kazakhstan increased by 4.1% to 2.313 million tonnes in January-July 2016, up from 2.222 million tonnes in the same period last year. The country has implemented a ban on the export of scrap metal several times over the past three years.
