Iran has the ability to lease regional gas pipelines abroad so as not to build new routes for exporting gas to EU countries, said Alireza Kameli, head of the National Iranian Gas Company.
Kameli noted that one of the ways to deliver gas to the EU could be the construction of LNG plants in Iran, but, in addition, Iran may consider the Mehr gas pipeline to organize gas exports.
At the same time, the construction of the Southern Gas Corridor (SCG) from Azerbaijan to Italy with a length of 3,500 km continues. SCG is expected to provide transit of 16 billion cubic meters per year of gas from the Shah Deniz field to Turkey and Europe by 2021.
Iran has already announced that it is eyeing gas supplies to the EU via SGC, although this can be quite costly since they are quite far apart.
