Workers of Peruvian iron ore producer Shougang Hierro went on strike Monday to halt production at both the Marcona mine and the San Nicolas concentrator, the union and the company have confirmed.
According to the company, all 953 workers have joined the strike and are protesting to improve working conditions and raise wages. Until now, it has not been disclosed whether the supplies were affected. According to local law, once a strike is approved by the local labor authority, it is illegal to proceed with further product shipments. The previous big strike against the company took place about a year ago, in mid-September 2015.
The Peruvian subsidiary of the Shougang Group of China has a production capacity of 10 million tonnes of iron ore per year. The company is currently working on a project to double its installed capacity to 20 million tonnes of iron ore per year.
