France sent the second of the Mistral warships originally built for Russia to Egypt on Friday. The government in Cairo bought them when Paris canceled a contract with Moscow following the annexation of Crimea to Russia in 2014.
The originally developed warships were named Vladivostok and Sevastopol. After signing an agreement with Cairo, he renamed them "Gamal Abdel Nasser" and "Anwar Sadat", after the names of the former presidents in Egypt.
Negotiations are currently underway between Egypt and Russia to provide Mistral with Ka-52K helicopters, according to Russian media.
In August 2015, the French authorities finally canceled the contract of 1.2 billion euros for the supply of Mistral to Russia. Egypt bought two ships for about 950 million euros, thanks to financial support from Saudi Arabia.
Cairo is seeking to increase its military capabilities amid the two-year uprising in northern Sinai and the conflict in neighboring Libya.
