Trade statistics show significant increases in iron ore exports from Brazil and Canada. On the other hand, export volumes recorded declines in other major exporting countries, including Russia and South Africa.
Brazilian iron ore exports in August increased by 14% over the previous year to 34.5 million tons. Exports of iron ore in Canada increased by more than 16% during July this year to 3.413 million tons. The largest importers of Canadian iron ore during the month are the Netherlands (607,500 tons) and China (360,800 tons).
Iron exports totaled 4.685 million tonnes in January-June 2016, down 30.9% from exports in the same period a year earlier, according to data released by the Russian Customs Committee. The largest importers of Russian ore in the first six months of 2016 were China (2.938 million tonnes) and Ukraine (1.243 million tonnes). The average export price fell 5.2% to $ 40.60 per tonne.
South Africa's iron ore exports were down 8.4% from the previous year to 5.93 million tonnes in the month of July this year. Average export prices recorded a sharp 19% year-on-year decline to $ 56.5 per tonne FOB. The main importers of iron ore during the month were China (3.593 million tonnes), India (769,000 tonnes) and Japan (593,000 tonnes)
