From March to August this year, Iran increased its steel exports by almost two-thirds. The country is building iron ore processing plants with a capacity of up to 10 million tons per year. Two of these plants will begin work before the end of the current Iranian year, which ends March 20, 2017. They are located in Xianggang district in Khorasan Razavi province. Iran is the 10th largest iron ore deposit in the world, estimated at 1.2 billion tons.
Iran's ambitious development plan, including the steel sector, adopted by Iran more than 10 years ago, requires a further increase in capacity from 28 million tons to 48 million tons in 2018, 82 million tons in 2021 and 85 million tons in 2025.
During the five months of the current Iranian year, that is, from March 20 to August 20, Iranian metallurgical plants smelted a total of 7.5 million tons of steel, which is 5.3 percent more than last year. During this time, Iranian exports of steel and steel products totaled 2.95 million tons, an increase of 62 percent year on year.
