World production of crude steel from 66 countries that reported data from the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), in August 2016 increased by 1.9% compared to August 2015 to 134.1 million tons.
China's crude steel production in August 2016 reached 68.6 million tonnes, an increase of 3.0% compared to August 2015. Japan produced 8.9 million tonnes of steel in August 2016, an increase of 1.5% compared to August 2015. India produced 8.1 million tonnes of crude steel in August 2016, up 9.4% from the same month last year. Crude steel production in South Korea totaled 5.9 million tonnes in August 2016, up 1.8% from August 2015.
In the EU, Germany produced 3.5 million tonnes of crude steel in August 2016, an increase of 2.4% over August 2015. Italy produced 1.1 million tonnes of steel, up 7.4% in August 2015. 1.0 million tonnes of crude steel were produced in Spain in August 2016, down 11.8% from last year.
Crude steel production in Turkey in August 2016 amounted to 2.9 million tonnes, an increase of 12.9% compared to August 2015.
In August 2016, Russia produced 5.9 million tonnes of crude steel, down 1.9% compared to August 2015. Ukraine produced 1.8 million tonnes of crude steel, down 4.1% compared to the same month in 2015.
The United States received 6.7 million tonnes of crude steel in August 2016, down 3.4% from August 2015. Brazilian crude steel production in August 2016 was 2.7 million tonnes, 1.1% lower than in August 2015.
The crude steel capacity utilization rate of 66 countries in August 2016 was 68.5%, higher than the 68.0% in August 2015.
