According to the latest data released by the World Steel Association, the crude steel output of South American countries dropped significantly during August 2016. Total monthly output fell 6.6% to 3.491 million tonnes. North American steel production also declined 3.0% during the month.
Brazil, the largest producer in South America, produced 2.768 million tonnes of steel, down slightly 1.1% from 2.799 million tonnes in August last year. Argentina's total crude steel production in August was 343,000 tons, down 27.5% from August 2015, when production was 474,000 tons. Chile's output recovered nearly 0.9% to 100,000 tonnes in August this year. Colombia's total crude steel production is down 10.7% this year to 105,000 tonnes in August. Venezuelan production dropped significantly, down 89.1% year on year, from 92,000 tons to 10,000 tons.
During the month of August, North American crude steel production declined 3.0% year-on-year to 9.548 million tonnes, compared with 9.839 million tonnes recorded in August 2015.
Total crude steel production in Canada in August this year was 1,100 million tonnes, down 1.6% from August 2015. The United States produced 6.703 million tonnes of steel, down 3.4% from 6.936 million tonnes achieved in August 2015. Mexico's total crude steel production rose 1.9% from 1.659 million tonnes in August 2015 to 1.690 million tonnes in August this year.
